CNN Airs Living with Schizophrenia Story

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 6:32 PM
Colleagues,
Our documentary “Living with Schizophrenia: A Call for Hope and Recovery” continues to be an inspiration for many.  The film, which tells the stories of three real people living with schizophrenia, is still receiving great feedback from the mental health community.  As a result of our ongoing efforts to promote the film, this week millions of people across the country will meet Ashley Smith, one of the people featured in the documentary, as she shares her story on CNN.

The taped news segment aired today during the network’s American Morning program.  It will repeat several times throughout the week on CNN and on its sister network HLN (Headline News).  It is also available online as part of Dr. Sanjay Gupta's Human Factor (click here to watch), which profiles survivors who have overcome an injury, illness or other hardship by tapping their inner strength and finding resilience they didn't know they possessed.

To accompany the video feature, Ashley has written a blog entry featured on the website.  In the blog, she discusses her journey of recovery and what she hopes people will take away from her story.  She mentions her participation in the documentary and cites the Choices in Recovery website as a great resource for patients, family members and friends.  We will also post the link on Janssen Today.  In addition to the segment with Ashley, CNN.com features schizophrenia in the InHealth section on the home page, with articles on sticking to your schizophrenia medications, the use of long-acting injectable medications and others.

Ashley’s CNN story is an outcome of a program held at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) health conference earlier this year, where she appeared as part of a panel to discuss mental health in the African American community.

Sharing this information with the millions of people who watch CNN and visit the website each day will help others recognize that people with schizophrenia can have a meaningful life.  This film and her story are excellent examples of our vision and commitment to support hope and recovery for the millions of people with serious mental health conditions.
